I Side With

Branding, UX, UI

I would like to think that I am a fairly well-informed citizen when casting my ballot during elections. Yet even then, there are times that I have to do an ‘ini mini miny moe’ because there are candidates that I have never heard of. During the 2016 election season, I came across the website ‘I SIDE WITH’ and fell in love with its focus on matching my values and beliefs to a candidate through a survey. However, I quickly realized that people were possibly only using this site during the presidential election and I felt that this site could be beneficial in more ways and more than every four years, so I worked on a rebrand, I conducted and analyzed surveys, and re-envisioned the homepage.

Surveys & Research

I created two surveys and sent them to people of different age groups, race, and backgrounds. The first survey was centered around understanding their political engagement and the second was focused on their thoughts about the current I SIDE WITH website. Once the surveys were completed, I spent time evaluating the results to draw conclusions and solutions that would improve the user experience and value of the website. Some interesting findings were that people generally only voted during the presidential elections and were disengaged for the others, most people didn't feel totally confident in their decision when voting, and more than 60% feel only somewhat familiar with how our government works.

After conducting the surveys, I created user personas that would represent the wide range of people (18+) that the website needs to serve. It could be someone at the age of 19 who is in college and is concerned about the cost of an education and the negative climate on immigration because her parents are immigrants. It could also be someone at the age of 27 who is not very politically involved nor has a specific concern but would like to find an easier way to make an informed decision when voting and learn more about the role of the government. Another person could be a mother at the age of 48 who is concerned about gun violence at schools and changes in the tax bill that may affect her business. Lastly, it could be a grandfather at the age of 73 who is concerned about the rising costs of his medications and medicare.

I conducted a closed card sorting exercise with a few people where I gave them an oveview of the website, it's core goals and functions, and asked them to group the cards in what they felt was most logical. Once I completed the sitemap, I then began on the wireframes of the homepage for the presidential election season, midterm election season, and off-year election. This would allow for I SIDE WITH to be both relevant and beneficial to our users year-round so that we could achieve our goal of boosting voter engagement.
